Every bag of trash that skips the recycling bin adds up to a bigger climate problem than most people realize. In 2018, the U.S. generated close to 300 million tons of waste, yet only about a third of it was recycled or composted. The rest sits in landfills, slowly breaking down and releasing pollutants for decades.

Landfills Are a Major Emissions Source

Landfill emissions rival the pollution from tens of millions of gas-powered cars driven for a full year. Decomposing municipal waste is responsible for a significant share of the country's human-caused methane emissions. Trash breaks down in stages — starting with an oxygen-rich phase that produces little methane, then shifting into oxygen-free phases where methane-generating bacteria take over. Nitrogen and oxygen dominate early on, then give way to rising hydrogen and carbon dioxide, before methane-producing bacteria take hold in the later stages. By the final stage, methane and carbon dioxide each make up roughly half of landfill gas.

The two gases behave very differently once released. Carbon dioxide lingers in the atmosphere and would require an enormous amount of new forest growth to offset a single year's worth of emissions. Methane, on the other hand, has a shorter lifespan but traps dramatically more heat while it's active, making it a serious short-term threat to air quality, crop yields, and human health.

Leachate and Microplastics Compound the Problem

Landfills don't just pollute the air — they threaten water supplies too. Rain and internal moisture filtering through decomposing waste create leachate, a contaminated liquid that has to be captured, stored, and treated as wastewater before it can safely re-enter rivers, lakes, or sewer systems. Facilities rely on permits, storage tanks, and treatment plants to manage it, but the process is costly and imperfect.

Plastic waste adds another layer of concern. As it degrades over decades or centuries, it sheds microplastics into soil, air, and water. Even advanced treatment systems can't filter out every particle — some technologies capture the vast majority, while older systems let far more through. Studies have found microplastics in treated drinking water and human tissue, with growing evidence that these particles can affect major organs and disrupt the ocean's natural ability to absorb carbon dioxide, indirectly accelerating climate change.

Small Habits Make a Real Difference

Common recycling mistakes — bagging recyclables in plastic, skipping rinsing, "wish-cycling," or ignoring local guidelines — reduce how much material actually gets processed and diverted from landfills. A few consistent habits go a long way:

  • Rinse containers before recycling them.
  • Compost food scraps and yard waste instead of tossing them.
  • Check your local curbside rules regularly, since accepted materials can change.
  • Repurpose items when possible instead of discarding them outright.
  • Look up anything unclear before throwing it away.

Every properly recycled item is one less contributor to landfill emissions, leachate, and microplastic pollution — and one more step toward a healthier planet.
